GOVERNMENT and employment agencies will begin their recruitment drive in Hunter schools next month to find students who want to become plumbers, electricians, fitters and turners and mechanics.

Cessnock Mayor John Clarence officially launched the Try-A-Trade program this week at the Cessnock Rugby League Supporters Club.

The program brings industry professionals and apprentices to year 9 students to talk to them about the type of work available as well as training and salaries.

The first session will be held at Belmont High School on August 25.

Hunter Australian Industry Group representative, Sandra Gilshenan said it was hoped more students would consider apprenticeships because there was a huge skills shortage across the nation.
