Don't Overestimate What Employment Agencies Can Do

Thursday January 15, 2009

One of the biggest problems for employment agencies is that many people have unrealistic expectations about what they offer. A lot of people seem to think that if they merely give their name and details to employment agencies, they can just wait for a response. This fails to take into account the fact that employment agencies have a lot of candidates to choose from already. Unless you work at a relationship with an employment agency, they will simply put your name into their systems and probably do little more to help you. Instead, you need to keep in contact and ask if the employment agency has found you any opportunities. Once you have established a good relationship with them, employment agencies are likely to think of you first when suitable opportunities come up.

Employment agencies can be useful in finding opportunities and can get you interviews sometimes, but you will still need to do your own searching through listings and you will need to learn to interview well. On the upside, many employment agencies offer courses to help candidates to learn superior job search and interview skills. Other professional development may also be offered if you choose the right employment agencies.

Please visit our engineering jobs and graduate jobs pages if you are interested in browsing listings in addition to using the services of employment agencies.
