Securing Your Employment: Making Yourself Invaluable to Your Employer
Friday January 23, 2009
The new year festivities have passed and its back to the reality of work and the dreaded financial crisis. For those feeling less than secure in their employment, now is the time to show your employer how invaluable you are to the company.
Start by helping out your employer and fellow employees when you can, not only will you appear helpful but also show an understanding of the company, your employer and your own employment position.
You may do this by taking on extra projects, even those that are optional. While no one really wants any extra work, doing this it will show your dedication to the company, your employment and your strong work ethic.
Perhaps another simple way of showing your commitment is being punctual and not rushing out of the office with a sigh of relief at the end of the day.
Behave in a way that adds to the company's, and your employers, bottom line. Identify your strengths and weaknesses as an employee. Recognise which of your talents suit the company best and utilize them to make yourself invaluable to your employer.
Think outside the square; spend some time thinking of new ways the company can expand and develop, or maybe how it can cut costs to create tighter, more efficient organization.
Perhaps most importantly, network. Get to know your fellow employees, management and employer. For one it will create a friendlier atmosphere (and no one wants to fire a friend!) but more so, it will open the channels of communication between employees and employer and hopefully show how invaluable you are.
Overall, the current job climate in Australia is not at its strongest so now is the time to show your employer what you have to offer and make yourself invaluable.
